John Wakefield the Managing Director of Phoenix Distribution, the leading importers of Arai helmets into the UK explains how to fit a helmet properly

How long will my helmet last?

This is down to the type of use your helmet has. For instance a London despatch rider using his bike every day would need to replace his helmet more frequently than a weekend rider. If you carry out an average amount of riding then a good rule is to replace your helmet every 5 years from first use.

What happens if I drop my helmet?

The damage a helmet may sustain depends on the surface it comes into contact with; a smooth concrete floor may cause only minor cosmetic damage whereas a tarmac road with a protruding stone may cause some damage to the outer shell. Always get the helmet checked.

How do I change my motorcycle visor?

To remove the visor, first place it in the fully open position. The visor cannot be removed from any other position as the lock system will be engaged. When the visor is in its fully open position, levers deploy from the front edge of the side pods. Pull up on these levers until a click is heard and this releases the visor from the mechanism (do not continue to pull on the levers), and the visor can be pulled straight out.

What is small bottle of lubricant for?

This should be used sparingly on the visor aperture seal; it stops the rubber seal from drying out and allows the visor to slide into place.

How do I remove the side pods on my motorcycle helmet?

Once the visor has been removed, insert a non-marking implement (a flat ice lolly stick will suffice) between the helmet shell and holder, pressing the red retaining clip back, releasing the holder. To re-fit the holder, insert the top clip into the recess on the base plate and press firmly over the red clip until a click is heard. Check by pulling on the holder before re-fitting the visor.

What should I clean my helmet and visor with?

Arai only recommend the use of a mild soap solution, warm water and a soft cloth. A non-petroleum based wax polish can then be applied to the helmets outer shell.
